Snape.
· The
Mirror of Maybe by Midnight Blue
The story that seduced me into the fandom.
A Snape/Potter WIP with lovely characterization, a wonderful premise (that
not-so-incidentally sidesteps the usual problems inherent in the pairing),
and interesting thoughts on the nature and workings of magic. I found Midnight
Blue's older and more mature Harry considerably more interesting than the
bland canon version, and the story is so good that I don't mind the occasional
air of Harry Sue about the man at all. Not entirely the canon HP universe,
but just as nice.
· Conspiracy
of Silence by Nomad
Severus Snape creates his masterpiece:
himself. An intriguing account of Snape's student days at Hogwarts and a fascinating
demonstration of what a devastating force a true Slytherin can be - provided
he is as intelligent, cold-blooded, sociopathic, and ruthless as one Severus
Snape. Salazar would approve.
· Lovelorn by Spyke Raven is deliciously dark, haunting, and disturbing in the best possible way. It's also very difficult to summarize. To quote the author: "Love, loss, beginnings and endings. Set circa the 1980s. Snape has come home." Regarding the pairing, she says "it's complicated"... and indeed it is.
· Fine
Lines and the sequel Shades of Grey by Shadowphoenix
Snape/Potter. In order to prevent the rise of a new Dark Lord and protect
the Boy Who Lived, Professor Snape goes undercover as a student at an American
Muggle university. The mind boggles. Very funny - I especially enjoyed the
microwave debacle - and very good Snape characterization. Shades of Grey is
still a WIP.
· Sorcerer's
Apprentice by LauraJV
Also Snape/Potter, also very good, and sadly also a WIP (what is it with this
fandom and WIPs, anyway?). Harry decides he wants to learn from the best.
Wonderful characterization, and some interesting theories on the internal
dynamics of Slytherin House and the nature of the students sorted into it.
The exploration of the apprentice bond itself also promises to be interesting.
· The
Familiar by Resonant
Snape/Potter. Amusing and surprisingly
sweet, in a good way. Harry does the Gryffindor thing and rushes in where
even fools should have feared to tread. As a result, Snape acquires a familiar.
· The
Love Charm by Minx
Snape/Potter. Charming and original.
· All
the Kings Horses and In
His Nightgown by Rachael Sabotini
Snape/Lupin. A mission goes wrong, it's a bad time of the month, and Snape
inadvertently reveals far more than he wants to. Angsty, subtly dark, with
beautiful Snape characterization.
· The
Skull Beneath the Skin by Ellen Fremedon
Snape/Lupin. In the words of the author: "The Dark Mark cuts deep. A
werewolf understands." Snape is forced to face his fears, first by Lupin,
then by himself.
· A
Spirit of Brotherhood by torch
A lovely, understated character study. As torch says: "Tea, nightshirts,
and blood. Cooperation isn't all it's cracked up to be for Sirius, Severus,
and Remus." The story reads a bit like a prologue to me... I can always
hope.
Harry/Draco
· Blue
Vase by IvyBlossom
Harry/Draco. This is an extremely difficult pairing that is almost always
treated as the simplest thing in the world, and that - as a direct result
- very rarely works. It does here, though. After the war, Harry has nothing
left to fight for. Draco tracks him down and lies to him. Very subtle, very
good, and rather sweet in a twisted way.
· Seconds
of our Reign by WaxJism
Another Harry/Draco that works. Raw, disillusioned and every bit as bleak
as I find this pairing pretty much has to be...
· ... unless you go the humorous route, as Augustus does in the Best Enemies series. Augustus' Draco works so earnestly and diligently at being nasty, and is so horrified at the discovery of his conscience, that it's really rather endearing. Wouldn't work in a serious story, but here, it's a lot of fun.
· Malfoy,
P.I. by Nancy
Harry/Draco. A highly enjoyable AU that doesn't have anything to do with canon,
at least not yet - because, yes, this is yet another WIP. A cynical and embittered,
scotch-guzzling private dick with a heart of gold falls for a mysterious client
with a pair of lying green eyes. He should have realized it was inevitable
- after all, it's practically in the job description.
And now for something completely different...
· Teacher's
Pet by Didodikali
Gen, and just cute. <g> Hermione suffers a small transfigurations accident
and is rescued by Professor Snape.
